Whats most provoking for many students on our Uni?
Alot of students at CSM, especially the international students are not to happy about the high tution fees. It can feel like youre getting yourselves huge loans that will follow you the rest of the life- and what do you get out of it? A 100 year old building that soon will be demolished, uninterested teachers and overcrowded spaces?
Acording to many CSM student this is the fact. Polls are showing that infact- the students at CSM are the most unhappy in the whole of the country.
So how can it be- that the most unhappy students are also some of the most successful ones?
It is a fact that CSM's structure might be rough- but its definitely working to. CSM in Southampton row is a building filled up with some of the best teachers in their field in the world, some of the oldest but best equipment, loads of hidden spaces, and facilities that you wouldn't know if you didn't bother to find it yourself.
CSM wants us to find things on our own way- with the institution being a resource that can be used getting where we want to get. If we as students realise this, and take advantage of what we surround ourselves by at uni- there are big chances many of us wouldn't be that negative.
In our campaign, which is a combination of the CSM on the move brief, and the PROVOKE brief- this is what we will try to work with.
First we wish to provoke and get a instant reaction out of the students, and then we want them to reflect. The best outcome would be if we could make our fellow students plan and think more about how to get the most out of their school money/ their education.
The project so far exists of 3 parts:
1: Provoke- Trough placing a sound machine next to the school entrance, we wish to provoce the colleges students through putting on a cash machine sound everytime someone walks trhough the door. This would hoepfully make a reaction where the students would understand that we are doing a art project- where we wnat to make the students think about how much money we are paying to study at CSM.
2: Inform- we wish to make a booklet/ flyer/ paper with interesting and useful facts about the college building. It will be like a course hand book by students, for students. It will begin with the sad and seemingly annoying facts about the college/ before we "undress" the bad facts- trying to focus on the positives. It will start up being 100 % negative, going towards being 100% positive. This is just an example- and not set yet. But we will anyhow work around a subject where we wish to make the students aware about the fact that if they open their eyes- there are loads of opportunities and ways to get more out of the time as a student.
3: Reflect- Through the exhibition space we wish to make the students reflect over what they have read in our magazine/ and interact with the theme. How can we get the most out of our time as students at CSM? We also wish to use the space as an example of a way to get more out of the colege space- aswell as being a celebration somehow of CSM Southampton row.
