Ok so i have gathered a few objects together! Rubber gloves, face masks, our white forensics suits and hazard tape to finnish it off. Thank you to all the prop girls at nicklodeon for their brilliant knowledge of where to find things! Gallery space next to Rosemary's Cafe is booked and confirmed for tomorrow. Quick in and out job though im afraid as the space has been booked for friday! oh well.
Martin killing it and helping all the way with organization and ideas and design. he holds in his hand the most ridiculous "Risk assessment form" ever devised by man! 4 pages of silly questions and all just to have a small photo shoot on the roof. (dont worry we wont jump, we've worked too hard) Should maybe point out that martin has a nerve problem in his back and the reason he looks like he is on drugs is because he is! savage painkillers i believe. still working hard like a trooper.... Extra points maybe?
Anders attacking InDesign like a pro to knock out "incident boards" as well as petition's and our evidence cards. lots of support and discussions with the group after all this is a group project, but boy does that man work fast in InDesign!!

Bjornar working hard on our campaign booklet. With the support from the fantastic 4 of course. ill be sending over my section soon please dont hate me! sorry is going to be like an hour late

Im not 100% on the "where is our space" font. not sure if it matches the authority of the rest of the page or is there a reason for this? what about the gothic one in caps? the one Anders liked.

Ok guys. ive borrowed my flat mates Nikon D300 so perhaps document some of our project goings on if you will. as well as any instillations we have complete! maybe we should try get one or two done in the evening just so we can have the whole of wednesday to start drumming up a reaction.
ill get on the phone to the exhibition dude in the morning! see what's going on
was thinking about the evidence... do we have any second year briefs that alot of people will remember or even like the second year show poster! didnt someone say they arnt doing one this year?

Could the fake officer be called Officer Lethaby or something like that?

can we hold the head of year accountable?
its a brilliant idea! i think we could possibly have a variety of things said on the tape. maybe custom to each place! how do we link it to the booklet and obtain feedback? (through the site?) so these are live with sound how do we get people to see them! Crime scene boards? i like the idea that the space was stolen from us! can we expand it?

Yo! Is this an alternative approach to our idea(s)? What if we take the rooftop terrace, the remnants of the cyber cafe, the empty student bar, and walls without student posters and bar them off as crime scenes? Maybe outline objects that used to be there with little numbers next to them (like evidence), for instance coffee cups, pint glasses? Still with the ambient sound in the background though, to give people a feeling of what have been going on there or what we possibly can make of these spaces? Maybe create an alternative police tape saying something along the lines of "bad planning in progress, do not cross". We could also have signage next to the pieces stating when they were seen the last time, when they "died", maybe some sort of date/year/etc. We could also look into fatal accidents signs etc. Could we link to a website/blog where we have say 5 pre-made posts (according to the spaces we are focusing on) where people could comment, giving vital information and evidence about these "accidents", just like people call the police to give information during an investigation? Maybe print out "business-cards" to a fake police officer with the website address on, and put them near the scenes? Loads of ideas here, just thinking it could be easier to focus on the spaces and what's already in them rather than transforming them into something new, as we do feel that we have been "robbed" of our social spaces, or ythat the uni have "murdered" them. Also, the visual language of a crime scene is something everybody knows and connects with. Dunno, what do you guys think?

Maybe we could think about incorporating this idea into a live video! with illustrations.

visual inspiration

Ok guys- dont know how relevant this is- but if we could work with the empty spaces in visual ways- like theyve done here- I think we would get something VERY interesting visually.

What they have done is pretty much mapped their visuals to shapes and filmed it.
What if we made the unused areas come to life with this method? In the beginnig of the video they are all empty and un used (places like the stairs, windows, parkinglot, roofterrace, etc etc) As the footage keeps goinf we add more and more projected pictures- before in the end they all disapear and the empty old down dusted spaces are left alone as they are?

dont know- just a idea :)

Application form downloaded, filled in, printed, signed, scanned and then emailed back! fingers crossed. the man with the plan on the phone said it was free monday to thursday so it should be ok.

Plan (for now)

Friday: Meet up at college at 11 ( I have a group tutorial from 10.30 till 1), to collect information. Everybody reflect on the feedback from today's tutorial. We have to talk to students in ALL departments not only graphics. Maybe work in pairs. We should also get a camera or 2 so we can document the process and maybe even take photographs of potential spaces.

Sunday: Look at ways to "brand" the campaign, i.e creating a visual identity for marking the spaces, maybe some sort of signage system, think about type, color, form, etc. Also, select up to 10 guerrilla tactics to execute around college.

Monday: Plan the Thursday event, invite people over Facebook perhaps? Think about how we market the event, and if we should include any other student work (i.e Jessica's film). We should also plan what equipment we need and how to get it.
i think this social space thing could relate to csm on the move! but all in all im not sure at all. i liked the old idea ?

New Idea:

Hey guys, we had a bit of a brainstorm tonight, as we couldn't really get both ends to meet. Basically we think its a little difficult doing both briefs, so we thought we'd might as well just fully focus on Amanda's instead. This is a followup from what we were talking about regaining our social space. We feel this idea lends itself pretty good to be quite provocative, and there's loads of opportunities to push this far as a group. What do you guys think? Thought, ideas, etc?

RECLAIMING OUR PUBLIC AND SOCIAL SPACE

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Abstract: What happened to the Cyber Cafe? Why weren't we, the students, informed about it being taken away? The Cyber Cafe was a welcomed breather in a hectic environment, and also our only social space at college (not like the charmless, institutional and pricy canteen that is Rosemary's). Why should the school administration and staff be allowed to enjoy their lunch in warm, comfortably surroundings, when we are literally forced to eat our lukewarm Sainsbury's lunch in the hallways?

Proposition: We are reclaiming the last social space at college Thursday 26th Nov, 2009, by launching a one-off pirate pop-up cafe where the old Cyber Cafe used to be located. There shall be coffee and cupcakes! We will also bring some music and maybe even the fuss-ball table. A full student is a happy student!

Warfare: A Facebook-group (social medias = social space) will be created, in which we will engage the members (target audience) in a discussion on how the loss of the Cyber Cafe has affected them. The goal is to inform, engage and create a mobile unit of activists, which will help us achieve our desired effect. This will be further supported by a guerilla campaign throughout the college grounds. The campaign will have the same focus as the Facebook-group, subtly questioning the disappearance of our only social space (not revealing the whole solution). Upon the main day of the event, the campaign reaches its peak, where the event will be communicated boldly.

Suggestions for launch-day tactics: Needs to be filled out

Goal / Outcome: To document in form of a photo diary, petition to send to the dean or board of directors who made the decision to close the cafe down. The aim: to show them how important and how much fun we had by having our own social space. Ultimately, demanding our space back.

- One of the main architects from Stanton Williams who gave a talk at college some time ago noted that the only social place he saw at our college was that of outside the building on the pavement (...).

Isotype II

This is pretty epic.

Isotype

So this isn't exactly ground breaking information, but I came across these whilst looking up different ways of displaying information. "... Otto Neurath who was involved throughout the 1920s with making statistics more accessible to the public. Neurath and his colleagues in Vienna designed Isotype, a visual language made up of pictograms and visual techniques for conveying complex issues following the motto: "it is better to remember simplified pictures than to forget accurate figures". Instead of creating diagrams of abstract shapes, these information pictures typically featured pictograms that individually resembled, for example, people and products. Taken together they represented more complex, social and economic issues such as health, working conditions, and global trade."

Found some decent cash register noises! one problem down! many many to go

Maybe we could think about getting some press coverage as a reaction to the article in the Observer.?
Ive been looking at IR beam sensors and all kinds of stuff i wont even begin to pretend to understand! i think the original idea of the web cam could work! ive drawn up an idea? tell me what you think. perhaps white strips of paper will allow us to increase the threshold of pixels it picks up (ie brighter ones).
I was also thinking we could try obtain the CCTV footage from the front to have some documented natural reactions. instead of us standing there filming it! but maybe both would be a good plan!

Rations

Had a look at ration books from world war 2, it could be cool to present the printed piece in some sort of form like this perhaps? Ties in as its an for of currency, which would make sense. I read that "Rationing is the controlled distribution of scarce resources, goods or services" - although we could move away a little from this but use it as a form of communicating our message?

PROVOKE/ INFORM/ REFLECT

Whats most provoking for many students on our Uni?

Alot of students at CSM, especially the international students are not to happy about the high tution fees. It can feel like youre getting yourselves huge loans that will follow you the rest of the life- and what do you get out of it? A 100 year old building that soon will be demolished, uninterested teachers and overcrowded spaces?

Acording to many CSM student this is the fact. Polls are showing that infact- the students at CSM are the most unhappy in the whole of the country.

So how can it be- that the most unhappy students are also some of the most successful ones?

It is a fact that CSM's structure might be rough- but its definitely working to. CSM in Southampton row is a building filled up with some of the best teachers in their field in the world, some of the oldest but best equipment, loads of hidden spaces, and facilities that you wouldn't know if you didn't bother to find it yourself.

CSM wants us to find things on our own way- with the institution being a resource that can be used getting where we want to get. If we as students realise this, and take advantage of what we surround ourselves by at uni- there are big chances many of us wouldn't be that negative.

In our campaign, which is a combination of the CSM on the move brief, and the PROVOKE brief- this is what we will try to work with.

First we wish to provoke and get a instant reaction out of the students, and then we want them to reflect. The best outcome would be if we could make our fellow students plan and think more about how to get the most out of their school money/ their education.

The project so far exists of 3 parts:

1: Provoke- Trough placing a sound machine next to the school entrance, we wish to provoce the colleges students through putting on a cash machine sound everytime someone walks trhough the door. This would hoepfully make a reaction where the students would understand that we are doing a art project- where we wnat to make the students think about how much money we are paying to study at CSM.

2: Inform- we wish to make a booklet/ flyer/ paper with interesting and useful facts about the college building. It will be like a course hand book by students, for students. It will begin with the sad and seemingly annoying facts about the college/ before we "undress" the bad facts- trying to focus on the positives. It will start up being 100 % negative, going towards being 100% positive. This is just an example- and not set yet. But we will anyhow work around a subject where we wish to make the students aware about the fact that if they open their eyes- there are loads of opportunities and ways to get more out of the time as a student.

3: Reflect- Through the exhibition space we wish to make the students reflect over what they have read in our magazine/ and interact with the theme. How can we get the most out of our time as students at CSM? We also wish to use the space as an example of a way to get more out of the colege space- aswell as being a celebration somehow of CSM Southampton row.
